Relationship Issues

To live in society is to be in relationship – with neighbors, friends, co-workers, parents, spouses, children, and even strangers. Our first and most fundamental relationship is with our Self. Relationships are never smooth and easy, and sometimes they can be painfully difficult. The good news is that they are not static, they can – and almost always do – change. When one person changes, the relationship changes. Any person in a relationship can be the one to initiate the change and move away from emotional pain.

In a relationship that doesn’t seem to be working well, the people involved are not always equally aware of the existence of a problem. Often only one person, usually emotionally healthy, is more likely to recognize the problem and seek help. Other people in the relationship may be unaware of the severity of the problems until it is called to their attention in a way that makes sense to them. Until then there is either silence or fruitless arguing. That is why a therapist is an ideal facilitator of the dialogue that needs to occur. In the therapist’s office differences are translated into dialogue that all parties can understand.
