Anxiety
Anxiety is an uncomfortable feeling that can range from “nervousness” and involuntary mild hyperactivity to a paralyzing, terrifying panic attack, and includes many types of symptoms along a continuum of severities. Fears - of leaving the house, flying, driving, appearing in public, meeting new people – are manifestations of specific anxieties. So are constant worry, obsessions, compulsive habits, and a pervasive maladaptive response to abuse or a traumatic event. Medical illness, financial problems, items in the news, concern for people we love – all can make us feel anxious.
The appropriate treatment for Anxiety depends on the severity of the symptoms and their root causes. Sometimes medication is helpful, in other cases it is unnecessary. A professional assessment is the first step. Many people derive great benefit from gentle “reality checks” with the therapist, and in designing “baby steps” toward increased comfort and the ability to feel safe.
